Beyond Belief: A Science-Backed look at Energy, Modern Healthcare and Healing
We often think of “energy” as something mystical or hard to grasp — but what if it’s simply part of how the body already works? Lets unpack how modern society relies on energetic principles every day, from MRIs and EEGs to sound-based therapies and electromagnetic heart fields.
Let's talk about the word "energy." It's one of those words can make people squirm. For some, it conjures up vague ideas of auras and crystals, or it's dismissed as something that only belongs in "woo-woo" spiritual circles. If you're someone who likes your ideas backed by established research or grounded in the body, it might feel easier to roll your eyes than lean in.
But here’s a question worth asking: What if talking about energy doesn’t mean believing in something paranormal? What if it’s simply a language for what science already knows and has been proven - about vibration, resonance, regulation, and presence?

Ever walked into a room and just felt something was off?
No one says a word, but the air feels heavy. Maybe tense. Like something just happened. We’ve all been there, and we even have the language for it - “high vibe” or “low vibe.”
It’s not just a metaphor. Your body picks up on energy, on tone, tension, even unspoken emotion. In neuroscience, it's a concept called neuroception: your system’s way of scanning for safety without needing words. It’s subtle, but it’s real. You’re not imagining it. You’re just attuned.
WHY THE WORD "ENERGY" CAN FEEL SO LOADED
It’s not hard to understand the hesitation. For years, it’s been painted as either deeply spiritual or so floaty it might drift off into the ether. People assume it’s all belief-based, like if you don’t believe hard enough, it’ll vanish into a puff of sage smoke. That it’s more about magic than matter.
And honestly, I completely get it. I've been there. If you had told me a decade ago I'd be working in this space, I'd have laughed so hard that I'd need a chiropractor. Language matters. And when a word like “energy” has been used in ways that feel vague, or ungrounded, or exclusive, it makes sense to want to keep a healthy distance.
But here’s the thing: the conversation around energy doesn’t need to be all or nothing. And it doesn’t need to be woo. Because the truth is, your body is an energy system. You’re made of electrical impulses. You emit frequency. You respond to sound, touch, presence. Your cells communicate. Your nervous system is constantly scanning for safety. All of that is real. All of that is measurable.
Energy Healing Isn't Out There, It's Already in Here
Somatic bodywork practices like Spinal Flow, Spinal Energetics and Reiki don’t ask you to believe in something mystical. They invite you to notice what’s already happening. The softening when you feel seen. The breath that moves when you’re finally safe. The subtle shifts that happen not through force, but through resonance.
When we stop viewing the body as a machine to be fixed, and instead as a system to be attuned, energy stops feeling like a strange idea. It becomes something tangible. Your pulse. Your frequency. Your field.
And when we tune into that field - in relationship, in presence, in practice - healing doesn’t just happen in isolation. It happens between us, on a biological level.

CYMATICS, SOUND AND THE BODY
Cymatics is the study of visible sound vibration. It shows us that when sound moves through matter, it organises it into patterns. If sound can shape sand and water, what might it be doing inside your body - especially since you’re made of over 60% water?
When we vocalise (sigh, hum, moan), we’re not just making noise, we’re helping the body regulate. The vagus nerve, which helps calm the nervous system, passes through the throat and diaphragm. Sound doesn’t just move through us. It moves us - sometimes back into safety.
Cymatic patterns in water. Cymatics is the study of sound and vibration made visible, usually on a plate, membrane or a diaphragm.
ENERGY IS FOUNDATIONAL TO MODERN HEALTHCARE
Your body is made of energy - literally. This is why it's widely used by medical professionals in clinically, medically approved settings like hospitals without blinking an eye:
MRIs track how tissues respond to subtle electromagnetic shifts to create detailed images inside the body.
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to visualise internal structures and reduce inflammation.
Shockwave therapy sends focused acoustic energy into tissues to support healing from tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and other injuries.
Lithotripsy (ESWL) uses sound energy to break down kidney stones.
EEG (Electroencephalogram) measures your brain’s electrical activity by detecting the tiny electrical signals your neurons produce. Small electrodes are placed on the scalp to pick up these patterns. It’s often used to help detect seizures, sleep disorders, and changes in brain function.
ECG/EKG (Electrocardiogram) records the heart’s electrical rhythm to detect issues with function or flow.
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) delivers gentle electrical pulses to help relieve pain by calming nerve activity.
So when we talk about energy, especially sound or vibrational energy, we’re not necessarily talking about something mystical. We're talking about physics. About resonance. If vibration and frequency can stimulate change at a cellular level, influencing tissues and structure, what is the daily hum of city noise doing to your cells?
MODERN LIFE RUNS ON ENERGY WE CAN'T SEE
We rarely question the invisible energy of Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. We trust it to sync our phones, stream our music, track our sleep. It moves through walls, through space, through us, and we barely think twice.
Yet when it comes to the body, to energy work, to the idea that we might feel or respond to subtle frequencies — it suddenly becomes controversial. Why? If we accept that invisible waves can carry information between devices, why is it so far-fetched to imagine that our bodies — made of conductive tissue, sensitive to fields, responsive to vibration — might also be affected by these unseen forces?
CO-REGULATION & THE ENERGY BETWEEN US
The human heart emits an electromagnetic field measurable several feet beyond the body, and it’s not subtle. It’s the most powerful electrical field of any organ we have, even stronger than the brain’s. Research from the HeartMath Institute shows that these heart fields can shift depending on our emotional state, and that our fields may even synchronize when we’re in close connection with others (McCraty et al., 2004).
This isn’t just a poetic idea — it’s physiology. Your nervous system is relational. That means regulation doesn’t only happen within; it happens between. Through voice, eye contact, presence, and yes, energy.
This is co-regulation. It’s why a newborn calms against a parent’s chest. Why you feel your breath deepen around someone who feels safe. Why you walk into a room and feel settled, or tense, before a word is spoken.
Touch has been shown to lower cortisol and increase oxytocin. Heart rhythms can literally sync when two people sit together in calm presence. We are wired to feel each other, and to heal through that feeling.
Ready to Tune in?
If something in you is stirring - a curiosity, a question, a quiet yes - trust that. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You don’t need to believe in anything woo-woo or mystical. You just need to be open to exploring how your body already communicates, regulates, and heals in relationship.
